Weekend Writing Warriors: Never Trust an Olympian…

better wewriwa

Today for Weekend Writing Warriors my excerpt is from my YA fantasy romance Heir to the Underworld.

When we left off last time our hero Polydegmon had been attacked and badly wounded. The heroine, Frederica, rescued him from the monsters, but now poor Polydegmon has to face something much more fearsome than supernatural terrors…his new girlfriend’s father, Colin! So far it’s not going well…

“I won’t let you hurt her,” Colin said.

Polydegmon pursed his lips in annoyance. “Is it so impossible I should have honorable intentions toward Frederica?”

Colin laughed outright, a sharp bark of disgust that set Polydegmon’s back up in indignation. “I know the classics as well as most men, and if ever an Olympian did right to an innocent girl, this is the first I’ve heard of it.”

Polydegmon looked at the man, and made himself show no signs of intimidation, even as he remembered with a twinge what Colin was capable of. “Think what you wish but, because you love your ward, hear this, and let Earth and the High Heavens bear witness. I swear by the dark waters of the Styx and on my honor as an Olympian to keep Frederica from harm as best I may, be it physical…or emotional…”

More from this scene coming next week! ;P

The Story: Feisty Frederica Fitzgerald is just one day shy of her sweet sixteen when she’s nearly run over by a tall, dark dreamboat on a big black horse. Freddy can deal with the running over part–no harm done. The problem is the rider, Mr. Sex Bomb himself: Polydegmon, son of Hades and heir to the Greek Underworld.

Freddy’s hooked on Polydegmon from the start (although dude, togas went out of style several thousand years ago), being near him is enough to make her tingle down to her toes. But he’s got secrets he isn’t sharing, and trouble follows him closer than his own shadow: rabid dogs running around the suburbs, insane crows stalking Freddy and, worst of all, the feral fairies of the Wild Hunt trolling her hometown for their next bit of human game.

The closer Freddy gets to Deg, the weirder her life becomes, until Freddy discovers something about her own past that changes everything she ever thought she knew about herself. And her world…

  2. burnsmillie

This promises to be a lot of fun…looking forward to future snippets : )

  3. But does Colin believe him?

    • Not really no. :) Never trust an Olympian, after all.

  4. I’m guessing no man will ever be good enough for Frederica XD She’s probably annoyed with her dad. I know I would be, lol. You did a really great job with the dialogue. All those nuances, such as tone, eye movement, etc. are difficult. It flowed really naturally and was a pleasure to read :) I think it’s awesome you had Frederica saving her boyfriend. Sounds like she is a kick-ass heroine :D

  5. Ooh, I really like this snippet. Promises, promises. And what happens next, dear author?

  6. Great snippet. All girls should have dads like Colin.

    • That’s just how I feel. He’s my favorite character in the book. Ssh, don’t tell the others. :)
